Please notice that Nautilus Middle School (NMS) has assigned some summer home learning for reading and math; see attached below.. Please make sure to complete the assignments as they will be used to evaluate your performance upon entering NMS. Have a wonderful summer vacation!

Dear parents/guardians and students,

I wanted to say "thank you" for a wonderful year and all the hard work you have put in thus far. We have done a lot and we are only half way through the academic school year. So far we have traveled to the Arsht Center to to laugh and learn from the Rock Odyssey, down to South Beach to experience NASCAR and forces of nature, and to the Playground Theater to learn how a Red Thread binds us all.

Two of our students are competing in the County Science Fair, and some have been featured in the Miami Herald for their singing talents at the Student Expo. As readers we have learned about endangered species and "civil disobedience" in Hoot; grew scared with Sleepy Hollow; learned that manipulating scientific forces can be fun with The Gravity Keeper; and, appreciated the value of individuality with The Giver. Moreover, we ended the year with a "Bang" as we created the Solar System in our classroom for the new IB theme Where We Are in Place and Time. We have big plans ahead to Journey to the Center of the Earth with Jules Verne and to prepare to be IB authorized with an impending visit from the International Baccalaureate.

I hope you all get some much needed rest. When you come back we'll need to buckle up because the ride will be speeding up to the FCAT in April, a field trip to the Fort Lauderdale Museum and to a fabulous end of year.

Dear all,

As we prepare the student to be successful academically we need to continue to communicate often. With that in mind, I would like to schedule a conference to discuss your child’s academic progress and how we can work together to ensure his/her academic success. In order to try and accommodate everyone as best as possible, I asking that you please choose at least three possible dates to meet. I am available on the following days and times. Please place a check next to the three possible dates you can meet with me. I will respond with your finalized date the following day after receiving your response. Please remember to sign and return "all" the homework/behavior logs on the next school day, I am still missing some.

I would also like to take this opportunity to invite you to a parent workshop on the FCAT benchmarks I will be conducting in room 116 on Thursday, October 13 at 5:00PM. The workshop will take about 45 minutes - 1 hour and it will provide tips on how to help your child prepare for success on the FCAT early on. Don't miss out on this great opportunity to get one step closer to FCAT success. I would like to plan accordingly and therefore humbly request that you please check below whether you plan to attend. Refreshments will be served!

Dear parents/guardians,

Please note that I have added a new Social Studies tab where you and your child can find more resources for this area. At this point, I suggest that you take some time exploring the class wiki since I'm adding resources every week. Under each subject area you will see review sheets, assignments or projects assigned. In an effort to help you get organized I am now developing a calendar of events and due dates that will go under a page called "Calendar."

I suggest that you also take advantage of the Resources page, where I have posted a division and multiplication booklet and a science fair project booklet you can download to help guide you. IMPORTANT, the gifted class has two projects due. The first project is a science project found under the Science page and it's due on Friday, September 23, 2011. I strongly suggest you have your child do the bulk of work this weekend, so that they can work freely during the school days on their homework. The other project can be found under The Giver page and it will be due on October 3, 2011. This is a culmination of our IB Unit "How We Organize Ourselves."

Dear Parents,

We are now in our third week of school, can you believe it! I would like say thank you for welcoming me. I find that I'm loving this year's class more and more. In order to use time efficiently and get the students prepared I ask you to please do the following:

1. Become a member of the class wiki so that you can receive regular announcements and updates for your convenience. You may subscribe by going to the class wiki home page at http://msdiazclass.wikispaces.com and clicking on join this wiki. You will need to create an account but you don't have to use it, if in doubt you can always ask your child about the process.

2. Sign Release Forms. Please note that all students must return the picture release forms distributed during the first week of school and Open House in order to post pictures of the students on our class wiki and for our end of year scrapbook. I need this document with your signature whether you decide to approve or deny permission so please do so as soon as possible. If you have misplaced your copy please have your child prompt me or send me a note and I will send a picture release form home for your approval.

3. Return the Homework/Behavior Logs which were sent home every other week and these should be returned with your signature by the following weekday.

Please take time to check out the class wiki at least on a weekly basis for announcements and updates. Finally, I'd like to encourage you to volunteer to help with the class activities or just to share any talents with the class. I find that parents are the BEST resources :)
