Summer Reading Assignment

Dear upcoming 5th Grader,

Ms. Arenas has told me wonderful things about her class and how capable you are! I am really looking forward to having you as my student next year and learning many exciting things together. I like music, reading, dancing and going on field trips. I hope that you share your interests with me and that you infuse your interests into your projects in and outside of class.

I am wishing you have a wonderful summer full of fun and adventure! In the meantime, I would like you to go on a journey with me and the rest of your classmates by reading the following books over the summer and completing two book reports on:
1. The Lemonade War by Jaqueline Davies
2. Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff

The Lemonade War is great book that is easy to read, fun and very adventurous just like you! Pictures of Hollis Woods has a more serious theme that's appropriate for a gifted 5th grade student. These books are is available for purchase through Scholastic, or you may purchase through me or by going directly to Scholastic.com. I suggest you purchase your books before the school year ends. You may also purchase the books at Barnes and Noble, online at Amazon or Scholastic and get it mailed directly home. Both book reports will be due the first week of school and no exceptions will be made. Each book report will be GRADED for a reading, language arts and social studies grade. Directions on how to complete the book reports are at the bottom of this page or in the packet you pick up from me in room 205; scroll down to the bottom past the Discovery Science Camp see more.

BOOK REPORTS

How do I complete the summer book reports?
Please make sure that you write neatly and in PARAGRAPH FORM in ALL responses, and included the questions as well as your responses. You may type your assignment or you may write it by hand, but please make sure it is legible, free of spelling mistakes and that it makes sense by answering the question. Stick to the topic and don't wonder off into other topics. This means you must complete pages 1-3 for each book read. Each one of these book reports will be worth a grade for reading, language arts and social studies.

Finally, for your convenience I have included a class list of supplies for next year. You may also communicate with me if you have any questions about the assignment or anything else during the summer at tanyadiaz@dadeschools.net.
